We present an article, first in German, then in English, from one of our participating campaigns: Unblock Cuba in Germany, with some suggestions for actions that you can organise/take part in to protest the US blockade of Cuba.

UNBLOCK CUBA!!!
WORUM GEHT ES?
Seit über 60 Jahren verletzen die USA mit ihrer unilateralen Wirtschafts-, Handels- und Finanzblockade gegen Kuba Völkerrecht und Menschenrechte. Sie wurde durch die Trump-Regierung weiter verschärft und wird wegen der kolossalen negativen Effekte für die kubanische Bevölkerung und die sozioökonomische Entwicklung von Kuba als „Genozid“ bezeichnet. Dies wird in Jahresberichten der kubanischen Regierung faktenreich dargelegt [siehe http://www.netz¬werk-cuba.de/2020/10/cuba-vs-bloqueo/]. Diese brutale Blockadepolitik hat immer dramatischere Folgen für die Bevölkerung in Cuba: Geldüberweisungen von Familienangehörigen werden verunmöglicht, auswärtige Unterstützung für Gesundheitsprojekte wird verhindert, wichtige Medikamente können nur auf Umwegen und überteuert importiert werden, das Transportwesen muss massiv eingeschränkt werden. Außerdem schädigt die Blockade Unternehmen, Banken, Organisationen und Bürger:innen in allen Ländern, verletzt deren Bürger- und Freiheitsrechte.
Mit alljährlichen Resolutionen der UN-Vollversammlung votieren fast alle Staaten unseres Planeten unmissverständlich für ein Ende der Blockade und der Sanktionen. Doch die USA ignorieren diese einhellige Forderung, und die westlichen Regierungen äußern sich zwar gegen die Blockade, unternehmen aber bislang nichts Konkretes, sondern lassen dieses Unrecht geschehen und beteiligen sich daran. Die nächste Abstimmung in der UN-Vollversammlung ist für den 3. November geplant.
UND JETZT?
Weltweit wächst der Protest gegen dieses andauernde Verbrechen und den Terror der Supermacht USA gegen den friedliebenden Nachbarstaat. Nun soll, initiiert von der Tageszeitung „junge Welt“ und mehreren Cuba-Solidaritätsgruppen wieder eine Kampagne mit dem Motto „Unblock Cuba“ durchgeführt werden, wie schon zweimal zuvor, an denen sich über 120 Organisationen aus 24 europäischen Staaten beteiligten. Damit sollen spürbare Zeichen für die Abschaffung der Blockade gesetzt werden, damit Politik und Medien das alles nicht weiter ignorieren!
Die verbrecherische Blockade muss beendet werden, und dafür machen wir mobil, und wollen mit vielen aufsehenerregenden und vielfältigen Aktionen ein baldiges Ende der Blockade herbeiführen!
WAS TUN?

Dort gibt es Informationen und es können Materialien kostenfrei bestellt werden: Poster verschiedener Größen, Transparente, Infoblätter, Fahrradwimpel…. – manches davon in verschiedenen Sprachen. Dort werden Infos, Fotos, Videoclips, Social Media und Aktionsberichte gesammelt und verbreitet. Dazu E-Mails und Bestellungen senden an aktionsbü[email protected]
Die Kampagne kann je nach lokalen Möglichkeiten der Gruppen und Aktivist:innen in zwei Phasen durchgeführt werden.
Die UN-Abstimmung ist für den 3.11. (New York City) vorgesehen, tags zuvor (2.11.) wird es Stellungnahmen aus verschiedenen Staaten geben. Die beiden Höhepunkte für Aktivitäten sollten sein (Terminvorschläge):
Phase 1 VOR der UN-Abstimmung: Fr., 28.10. und/oder Sa., 29.10.
Phase 2 NACH der UN-Abstimmung: Fr. 4.11. und/oder Sa., 5.11.
(dann sollen für die Verbreitung des Ergebnisses auch die Social Media Kanäle benutzt werden!)
WIE TUN? Aktionsideen
Beispiele zu Phase 1 (Ziel: über die Blockade informieren):
- Fahrraddemo (z.B. von Kubas Botschaft zu US-Botschaft, wie in Berlin)
- Mahnwachen und Kundgebungen an sinnvollen Stellen vor Ort wie z.B. US-Botschaft oder US-Konsulat, Infotische, etc.
- Luftballons (in Farben Kubas: blau, weiß, rot) ggf. mit Infos behängen und fliegen lassen
- Flugdrachen basteln und aufsteigen lassen (wie auf UNBLOCK-Plakat)
- Übergroße Kubafahne (erregt Aufsehen; kann häufig verwendet werden)
- Blockade brechen: Kartons mit Aufschrift (z.B. „End the Blockade“; je ein Buchstabe pro Karton) als Blockademauer stapeln und dann schrittweise abbauen (z.B. mit Trommeln; Klatschen; Erläuterung pro abgebautem Karton/Buchstaben, was ohne Blockade für Kuba möglich wird)
Beispiele zu Phase 2 (Ziel: das Abstimmungsergebnis bekannt machen):
- Briefe bzw. Emails an alle lokalen/regionalen US-Botschaften und Konsulate, an relevante Regierungsmitglieder, Parlamentarier:innen und Politiker:innen
- Annoncen in ausgewählten lokalen oder überregionalen Zeitungen mit dem UN-Abstimmungsergebnis und knappen Infos; auch an Nachrichtenagenturen
- Social Media posts mit dem UN-Abstimmungsergebnis
- Einleger in ausgewählten Zeitungen mit dem UN-Abstimmungsergebnis und knappen Infos
- Fahnenaktion: Das UN-Abstimmungsergebnis soll visuell und gut sichtbar dargestellt werden; Optionen: Auf passenden Plätzen/Orten die Fahnen bzw. Papierdrucke der Fahnen (DIN A4 oder A3…) derjenigen Staaten auf dem Boden ausbreiten, die in der UN für die Kuba-Resolution und das Ende der US-Blockade gestimmt haben und dagegen die ganz wenigen gegenüber, die gegen ein Ende der Blockade stimmten.
Oder: die Fahnen jeweils in kleine Behälter oder Vasen oder Blumentöpfe stellen.
Oder: eine hinreichende Anzahl an Teilnehmenden aufstellen lassen, die die Fahnen bzw. Papierdrucke hochhalten und schwenken. Example: https://www.unblock-cuba.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/DSC01092-1.jpg

Von mehreren Soligruppen hat sie zum Ziel, Banken mit Kleinstüberweisungen mit Betreff „Cuba“ o.ä. zu beschäftigen, denn die „Compliance-Abteilungen“ der Banken prüfen, ob damit gegen Sanktionen verstoßen würde; das kostet Mühe/ Zeit/ Geld. Dies soll möglichst international ausgeweitet werden und helfen, Druck gegen diejenigen zu erzeugen, die sich an US-Blockade und nicht nach EU- und Völkerrecht verhalten. Die meisten dieser Aktionen können selbstverständlich auch jederzeit außerhalb der UNBLOCK Kampagne durchgeführt werden – und weitere Aktionsideen sind willkommen.
WICHTIG: Bitte von den Aktivitäten Fotos machen und kurze Texte verfassen, und möglichst gut und weit verbreiten: an Medien, über eigene Verteiler sowie Social Media. Dabei sollte gerne das Logo von UNBLOCK CUBA genutzt und es sollte auf die vielen anderen Aktivitäten in Europa allgemein hingewiesen werden.
Auf der Webseite www.unblock-cuba.de können alle Aktivitäten angekündigt und über alle berichtet werden, dort gibt es wichtiges Werbe- und Infomaterial, wie z.B. DIN-A5-Flyer, Poster verschiedener Größe, große leichte Banner etc. in verschiedenen Sprachen.
Und wir bauen auf Euch alle, selber aktiv zu werden. Sprecht mit weiteren Organisationen, aber auch mit Bekannten, mit Verwandten, mit Freundinnen und Freunden und unterstützt unsere europaweite Solidaritätsaktion, in welcher Form auch immer! Die Blockade muss weg!

UNBLOCK CUBA!!!
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
For over 60 years, the US has violated international law and human rights with its unilateral economic, trade and financial blockade of Cuba. It has been further exacerbated by the Trump administration and has been described as “genocide” because of the colossal negative effects on the Cuban people and the socio-economic development of Cuba. This is factually stated in annual reports of the Cuban government [see http://www.netz¬werk-cuba.de/2020/10/cuba-vs-bloqueo/]. This brutal blockade policy has increasingly dramatic consequences for the population in Cuba: money transfers from family members are made impossible, foreign support for health projects is prevented, important medicines can only be imported in a roundabout way and at excessive cost, the transport system has to be massively restricted. In addition, the blockade harms companies, banks, organisations and citizens in all countries, violating their civil rights and freedoms.
In annual resolutions of the UN General Assembly, almost all states on our planet vote unequivocally for an end to the blockade and sanctions. Yet the US ignores this unanimous demand, and Western governments, while speaking out against the blockade, have so far done nothing concrete but allow and participate in this injustice. The next vote in the UN General Assembly is scheduled for 3 November.
AND NOW?
Worldwide, protests are growing against this ongoing crime and the terror of the superpower USA against the peace-loving neighbouring state. Now, initiated by the daily newspaper “junge Welt” and several Cuba solidarity groups, a campaign with the motto “Unblock Cuba” is to be carried out again, as twice before, in which more than 120 organisations from 24 European countries participated. The aim is to send tangible signals for the abolition of the blockade, so that politicians and the media do not continue to ignore all this!
The criminal blockade must be ended, and we are mobilising for this and want to bring about an early end to the blockade with many sensational and diverse actions!
WHAT TO DO?
The central information platform is our website: https://www.unblock-cuba.org/.
There you can find information and order materials free of charge: Posters of various sizes, banners, information sheets, bicycle pennants…. – some of them in different languages. Information, photos, video clips, social media and action reports will be collected and distributed there. Send e-mails and orders to aktionsbü[email protected].
The campaign can be carried out in two phases, depending on the local possibilities of the groups and activists.
The UN vote is scheduled for 3.11. (New York City), the day before (2.11.) there will be statements from different countries. The two highlights for activities should be (suggested dates):
Phase 1 BEFORE the UN vote: Fri, 28.10. and/or Sat, 29.10.
Phase 2 AFTER the UN vote: Fri. 4.11. and/or Sat. 5.11.
(then the social media channels should also be used for the dissemination of the result!)
HOW TO DO IT? Ideas for action
Examples for phase 1 (aim: inform about the blockade):
– Bicycle demonstration (e.g. from Cuba’s embassy to the US embassy, as in Berlin).
– Vigils and rallies at meaningful places on the ground, e.g. US embassy or US consulate, info tables, etc.
– Hang information on balloons (in Cuba’s colours: blue, white, red) and let them fly.
– Make a kite and let it fly (as on the UNBLOCK poster)
– Oversize Cuba flag (attracts attention; can be used frequently)
– Break the blockade: Stack boxes with inscription (e.g. “End the Blockade”; one letter per box) as a blockade wall and then dismantle it step by step (e.g. with drums; clapping; explanation per dis-mantled box/letter what is possible for Cuba without blockade)
Examples of phase 2 (aim: to make the result of the vote known):
– Letters or emails to all local/regional US embassies and consulates, to relevant members of government, parliamentarians and politicians.
– Advertisements in selected local or national newspapers with the UN vote result and brief information; send also to news agencies.
– Social media posts with the UN vote result
– Inserts in selected newspapers with the UN vote result and brief information
– Flag campaign: The UN vote result should be visually and visibly displayed; options: Spread the flags or paper prints of the flags (DIN A4 or A3…) of the countries that voted in favour of the Cuba resolution and the end of the US blockade in the UN and the very few countries that voted against the end of the blockade.
Or: put the flags in small containers or vases or flowerpots.

– Example: the bank campaign “1c4cuba“. The aim of the campaign is to get banks to deal with small transfers with the subject “Cuba” or similar, because the “compliance departments” of the banks check whether this would violate sanctions; this costs effort/time/ money. This should be extended internationally if possible and help to create pressure against those who are complying with US blockade and not with EU and international law. Most of these actions can of course also be carried out at any time outside the UNBLOCK campaign – and further action ideas are welcome.
IMPORTANT: Please take photos of the activities and write short texts, and distribute them as widely as possible: to the media, via your own distribution lists and social media. The UNBLOCK CUBA logo should be used and reference should be made to the many other activities in Europe in general.
On the website www.unblock-cuba.de all activities can be announced and reported on, there is important advertising and information material, such as DIN A5 flyers, posters of different sizes, large light banners etc. in different languages.
And we count on all of you to become active yourselves. Talk to other organisations, but also to acquaintances, relatives, friends and support our Europe-wide solidarity action, in whatever form! The blockade must go!
